Can COPD be hereditary?

You may know that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can be caused by smoking, secondhand smoke, or exposure to harmful environmental factors.5 But sometimes emphysema and COPD can actually be hereditary conditions, passed from parents to their biological children.

Even nonsmokers can have alpha-1.

Genetic COPD, or alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD), may lead to various health problems. Alpha-1 often leads to lung disease that mimics traditional COPD—even in people who have never smoked tobacco or been exposed to secondhand smoke, etc.6 Smokers and nonsmokers can have genetic COPD.

How alpha-1 affects your body

AAT protects the lungs

Without any abnormal variants, a specific protein called alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT), is released by the liver, enters the blood, and is transported to the lungs, where it helps protect them from irritants and other health issues.

Abnormal gene variants

Both smokers and nonsmokers can have genetic COPD, because alpha-1 is caused by certain genetic variants in the SERPINA1 gene.

Low AAT levels

These variants can cause low levels of AAT, which plays a critical role in safeguarding the lungs.

Lungs vulnerable to damage

When you have low levels of the AAT protein due to genetics, your lungs may be more vulnerable to serious damage.2-3

 

Most people don’t even know they have alpha-1.

Because the symptoms of alpha-1 are the same as traditional COPD symptoms, it can go undetected for years. In fact, more than 90% of the estimated 100,000 people in the United States who have alpha-1 don't know they have it.7-8
